We will setup Sonarr v4 on a Qnap system to automatically download tv series from newsgroups with SABnzbd.

Sonarr makes it possible to automatically download TV series from newsgroups and via torrent files. In this tutorial we discuss the newsgroups option.

Sonarr V4 Configure Media Management

Go to Settings. And then choose Media Management.

Turn on Show Advanced Settings.

Check Rename Episode

You might wonder why renaming files is necessary. The answer is simple: many releases are encrypted and therefore have incomprehensible file names, such as “02ffb34078hg519fdf975adfbb1a267015ef13.x264”. This quickly leads to chaos in your media library. In addition, other programs, such as Kodi or tools for downloading subtitles, often cannot handle these files properly. By automatically renaming files, you ensure more clarity and better compatibility with other software.

Therefore, it is recommended to use the following settings.

Standard Episode Format “{Series.Title}.S{season:00}E{episode:00}.{Episode.Title}.{Quality.Full}-{Release.Group}”

Daily Episode Format “{Series Title} – {Air-Date} – {Episode Title} {Quality Full}”

Series Folder Format “{Series Title}”

Season Folder Format “{Series Title}”

Create empty series folders Yes

Download Propers Yes

Analyse video files Yes

Sonarr Qnap Setup Profiles

To the Profiles tab.

Click a section that you want to start using. And adjust this to your own preference. Above is my preference.

It is best to leave the language on English unless a TV series is also available in your own language. But the chance is very small that this tv show is found. This is because these series are uploaded very little in the newsgroups. And if they are present in the newsgroups, the scene rules are often not followed. As a result, these are not yet downloaded via Sonarr.

By hovering over the three indents. You can adjust the order of what Sonarr first tries to download.

At Cutoff you indicate when Sonarr has to stop searching.

When you’re done, click on Save Changes

Scroll down a bit until you see the Release profiles option. Click the plus sign at the bottom and add something you don’t want to download in the Must not contain field. For example, I personally block releases from MeGusta, because they often only contain 2.0 sound. I prefer at least 5.1 sound with my series, so that’s why I exclude these releases.

Sonarr V4 Setup Quality Qnap

With the right quality settings, you can reduce download errors in Sonarr V4 on a QNAP NAS. Here is a quick guide to optimizing this.

Now go to the Quality tab. By default, the Minimum Quality is set to 0. It is wise to adjust this value, so that you receive fewer unwanted downloads. Note: if you watch animated series, do not set this option too low, because these types of series often have a smaller file size.

Beware! As you can see, it is important to adjust the Title here as well so that it stays as close to a scene name as possible. Replace the dashes with periods and make sure that “1080p” and “720p” are at the beginning. For example: “HDTV.2160p”.

Sonarr v4 configure Indexers

Now go to the Indexers tab. These are the websites from which the NZB files are automatically downloaded. The more indexers you add, the more likely your desired TV series will be found and downloaded.

See also Newznab sites for an overview.
