Setting up your own news server may sound appealing to those who want to have complete control over their usenet access. However, the process is complex and expensive. In this article, we will discuss the most important aspects to consider when considering setting up your own news server.
A news server is a service that provides access to Usenet newsgroups via the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). Most people use a news server provider or a pay server, because setting up your own infrastructure is both technically challenging and financially very drastic.
One of the biggest challenges when setting up a news server yourself is the required storage space. A reasonably good payserver has a retention of at least 1500 days, which means that you need to keep your data available for at least 1500 days. This requires huge storage capacity and powerful hardware.
In addition, there are costs for maintaining a server park. The hardware, power supply and cooling entail considerable costs. If you do not have your own space, you will have to rent server space, which further increases the costs. In total, the costs for setting up a news server can run into hundreds of thousands of euros.
Due to the high costs, many people choose to work on a reseller basis. Here you use existing infrastructures of large news server providers and resell their services. This offers a cheaper and easier to manage option, without the need for huge data centers or your own infrastructure. Of course, this also has its disadvantages. For example, you will earn less from a subscription. But you also run a lot less risk.
Below are some Resseleres for news servers. You can contact these companies to offer your own Usenet news server service.
Although it is technically possible to set up a news server yourself, in practice it is often not feasible due to the high costs and complexity. For most users, a reliable payserver or working on a reseller basis offers a much more accessible and cost-efficient solution. In a market that is already flooded with usenet providers, it is important to think carefully before starting such a project.
