Why Use SSL Newsgroups? There are several reasons to use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) with newsgroups, especially if you value privacy, security, and speed.
What is SSL Usenet?
SSL, or Secure Socket Layer, provides a secure connection between your computer and your Usenet provider. By using SSL in your download program, the data connection is encrypted, making it harder for third parties to see what exactly happens between you and your Usenet provider. Many systems, such as web shops and internet banking, also use SSL to secure data.
Benefits of SSL Newsgroups
- Protection against privacy breaches: SSL encryption prevents others from eavesdropping on your data, which protects your privacy and makes your Internet activity more anonymous.
- Avoiding ISP speed limiting: Some ISPs can throttle your connection if they detect you are using Usenet services. SSL makes this harder for them to detect, which can mean you can download at full speed again.
- Extra security: Because SSL encrypts the data you send, you are better protected against malicious parties trying to gain access to your personal information.
Disadvantages of SSL newsgroups
- Slightly slower speed: Encrypting data can cause a small delay. However, you will hardly notice this difference in practice, certainly not with a good internet connection.
- Not supported by all providers: While almost all paid Usenet providers support SSL, it is still not a standard option with some free providers.
In short, SSL is a valuable addition for anyone who wants to use newsgroups securely and anonymously. With the added security and ability to avoid throttling, the benefits make the slight disadvantage of possible speed slowdown well worth it.
Enable SSL in your newsgroup download program
Usually you have to check SSL. However, you often need a different server address. This information can often be found on the web page of your Usenet provider. The port also has to be adjusted. Often this is port 563 (SSL port) instead of port 119 (less secure port).
