In this Readarr Qnap Setup tutorial, we will show you how to configure Readarr on a QNAP system so that desired e-books and audiobooks are automatically downloaded from newsgroups.
Before you start setting up Readarr Qnap
It is important that you meet the following requirements otherwise you will get stuck while following this tutorial.
Requirements:
- SABnzbd must be configured correctly and functional for downloading from newsgroups.
- The SABnzbd program should already be installed on your QNAP device.
If this is not the case, please first see the tutorial Install Qnap SABnzbd SSH.
Readarr Qnap Setup Media Management
Open the Readarr web page.
Open Settings, then Media Management, turn on Show Advanced.
Check the Books deleted from disk are automatically unmonitored in Readarr box here.
Under Root Folders, click the Plus sign.
Name Give it a name, for example Books or another name of your choice. The name you choose will not affect the functionality.
In Path Select a folder where you want to save your books. This will be the location where all downloaded files will be saved.
And then click Save.
Don’t forget to regularly click Save Changes above if you have made any changes.
Create folders for Readarr qnap
If you have not yet created a folder, create it as follows.
In your Qnap, go to Control Panel, Permissions, Shared Folders, and then Shared Folder.
Click Create and then select Shared Folder.
indexers Readarr Qnap setup
An indexer is required so that Readarr knows where to download the NZB file. These indexers search newsgroups for new uploads and make them available for download.
Open Settings, select Indexers.
Click on the Plus icon.
Select Newznab.
Enter your Newznab server details. If you don’t have a Newznab server yet, check the list of available servers Newznab servers. The more servers you add, the more likely your audiobooks and e-books will be found in the newsgroups.
Click on Test, to see if it went well.
And then Save.
Minimum age 10 minutes.
3000 is more than enough. If you only download E-books, this can be a lot smaller, for example 300MB. This increases the chance that less good books will be downloaded.
Maximum Size A limit of 3000 MB is usually more than enough. If you only want to download e-books, you can lower this limit to 300 MB, for example. Keep in mind, however, that a lower limit increases the chance of missing good books.
Retention The retention period of your Usenet provider determines how long files will be available. This information can usually be found on your provider’s website. Nowadays, retention is often three years or longer.
Click Save.
Readarr Qnap Profiles Setup
We will now configure the profiles to determine the desired download quality.
Click on Settings, and then Profiles.
We are going to adjust the default profile.
Click eBook.
You set this based on your personal preference and what your device supports. The extensions below are for e-books, while the other extensions are for audiobooks. You can create a separate profile for audiobooks.
AZW3: This format is specific to Amazon.
EPUB: This format is supported by most e-readers.
Mobi: This is an older format that is no longer actively developed. If your e-reader still supports it, you may want to leave it enabled to increase the chances of finding your desired download.
PDF: This format is supported by almost every device.
Check the box UpgradesAllowed. Readarr stops searching once the top result is found.
You can adjust the order by clicking on the 3 lines with your mouse. If desired.
Click Save.
Choose Spoken for Audiobooks if you want to download them automatically.
Check the box here as well UpgradesAllowed. This causes Readarr to stop searching when the top result is reached.
You need to check if your device is compatible with these audio formats. For example, FLAC can sometimes cause problems, but it does provide excellent audio quality.
Now at the bottom under Release Profiles, press the Plus icon.
At Must Contain you can indicate what should be present in the release name.
Must not Contain can block your releases from certain release groups.
And click Save. You will probably need to adjust these settings later if Readarr downloads unwanted books.

Now click on SABnzbd.
Now open SABnzbd, because you need some data from your SABnzbd installation. This data is unique to your setup.
In SABnzbd, click on the Gear icon. Go to the categories tab.
Add a Readarr category. This is optional, but if you choose not to add a category, leave this field blank when connecting SABnzbd.
And then under the general tab in SABNZBD, you can find the above information you need.
Now go back to Readarr.
Fill in the above information.
Click Test and then Save.
If the test fails. Please check the details again in SABnzbd. Uiteraard moet SABNbd ook aan staan!
Make sure the above options are enabled so that it will try to restart the download if it fails. Your Newznab provider needs to support this, but most providers offer this feature these days.
Download books with Readarr Qnap
Now we can add the desired books that you want to download from the newsgroups.
Now go to Library. then ADD New.
Search for the name of a book and the author will appear. Then click on the author’s name.
Now the following screen will appear. Here you can select whether you want audiobooks or e-books. It is not possible to select both for the same author. If you want to download both audiobooks and e-books, you will need to run a second Readarr installation on a different port. It is best to use one instance for audiobooks and the other for e-books.
Check the box Start search for missing books. And then click on the green button to add the desired writer.
It will now automatically search for all books by this author. This may take a while, so please be patient. The search time depends on the number of Newznab providers added, the filters you have set and the popularity of the book.
Now if you go to Books. Then you will see all the books by this author.
